FRUSTRATED women have revealed how taking CBD oil has eased their symptoms of vaginismus – and helped them enjoy pain-free sex.
The condition, recently highlighted on the hit Netflix show 'Sex Education', is described by the NHS as when “the vagina suddenly tightens up just as you try to insert something into it”.
According to a 2017 survey, one in 13 UK women reported experiencing pain during sex which can ultimately lead to sexual anxieties, triggering vaginismus.
And according to Vaginismus Awareness, two out of every 1,000 women has at least moderate vaginismus.
Popular online forum Reddit has become a welcome sounding board for more than 7,000 sufferers to share their experiences and also advice on how to tackle the condition.
One resourceful user revealed how the use of CBD oil – also known as cannibidiol – has helped to relieve pain and reboot her sex life.
CBD is extracted from the cannabis plant but contains only trace amounts of the psychoactive ingredient tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), making it perfectly legal.
The Reddit poster revealed: “Oddly enough CBD oil (no THC) really helped! I tried it a few days ago and my body started to feel so relaxed, it was like I had just woken up from a comfy nap.
“The sex wasn't painful and it even felt good! It felt like how it did before all the pain started. I don't know why specifically only CBD oil helps me best but I'm glad I tried it when I wasn't sure it would help at all.”
She continued: “I applied it under my tongue and swallowed it after a minute with water.”
However, amorous lovers might need to act fast as the forum poster explained it only has short-term benefits.
“I'd say probably 30 minutes to an hour and after several hours it stops being effective,” she revealed.
Meanwhile, another user shared their experience in using CBD lube to relax before intercourse.
They said: “I just tried some for the first time last night. I was completely sceptical. I am no longer sceptical.
“Seriously, last Friday – pain, frustration, it wouldn’t go in. Last night – no pain.
"And it went almost all the way in. 10/10 would recommend. I can’t wait to try it again.”
While there are no current studies into using CBD oil to reduce pain or increase sexual pleasure, David Barcly of leading UK firm CBD Armour, based in Birmingham, welcomes the Reddit user’s experimentation.
He said: “It’s always interesting to find out new ways that CBD oil is being used.
“It has been proven through several studies that the components in cannabidiol can act as a muscle relaxant and help ease anxiety.
“While using it as a cure for vaginismus is not medically proven, we welcome any future research into the topic.”
Other suggested ways to tackle vaginismus included using vaginal dilators, going to sex therapy or counselling sessions, doing regular kegel exercises and in some cases botox injections.
